Members face increased phishing and cyberattack attempts

Mountain America Credit Union’s information security team is seeing an increase in phishing and other types of cyberattacks reported by our members.

Watch for these warning signs of fraud:

Phone scams—Attackers may use phishing and social engineering techniques to call members, pretending to be Mountain America fraud representatives. They ask members to verify their identity with their username, password, codeword, PIN and other sensitive information.

Phishing emails and texts—Hackers often send phishing emails and text messages notifying members of a suspicious transaction. These messages may threaten to suspend the member’s credit/debit card or hold pending payments unless the member acts immediately—typically linking to a fake Mountain America website and login screen. If the member enters their username and password on the fake site, scammers can use this personal information to access the member’s account and commit fraudulent transactions.

Protect yourself and others from phishing and other cybersecurity attacks by following these IT Security Best Practices.

Consider these additional security measures:

  • Mountain America will never contact you and ask for your online banking password, codeword or six-digit code. Never respond to emails or text messages requesting personal information. If you have any doubt, call our service center at 1-800-748-4302.
    • You may occasionally receive calls from 1-855-822-1243 to verify Visa transactions. These calls are legitimate.
  • If you receive a suspicious email claiming to be from Mountain America, forward it as an attachment to phishing@macu.com. Learn how to spot a phishing email.
  • If you opened a questionable link and shared your login credentials, codeword, PIN or other sensitive information, immediately call our service center at 1-800-748-4302.
  • Change your password to something more complex—include a mixture of capital and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. Make sure it’s at least eight characters long. Never reuse a password from another site.
  • Monitor your accounts using our free alerts and notifications.
  • If you see any suspicious transactions, immediately contact the service center at 1-800-748-4302 or visit your nearest branch.
