credit card FAQs

Do I need to be a Mountain America Credit Union member to apply for a credit card?

You don't need to be a member to start a credit card application. However, you'll need to qualify for membership to complete the process.

Why should I get a credit card?

People get a credit card for a variety of reasons, including convenience, security, building credit history and receiving perks like rewards and cash back.

How many credit cards should I have?

It depends on your financial situation and goals, but generally speaking, you should have at least one credit card in order to build credit. However, before you apply for one or more cards, make sure you can always make your payments on time.

What information do I need to apply for a credit card online?

You will need to provide information such as your name, date of birth, Social Security number, income and employment history.

What is the minimum credit score for a credit card?

The higher your score, the better chance you have of getting a credit card. That doesn't mean there are no options if you have a lower score. One of our service representatives can help assess your situation and develop a strategy to meet your financial goals.

How do I check the status of my credit card application?

You can check your application status by calling our service center at 1-800-748-4302 or contacting your nearest branch.

Is tapping to pay safe?

Yes, contactless cards are secure for a number of reasons:

  • Visa® contactless cards have the same security features as standard Visa chip cards.
  • A one-time code is generated every time you tap to pay at a contactless-enabled terminal, protecting your payment information.
  • You can't pay accidentally—your contactless chip card must be within two inches of the terminal for the transaction to take place. And you won't be billed twice, even if you accidentally tap twice.

Can I select my payment due date?

The minimum payment for your credit card is due at the end of each month. However, you have the freedom to make your payment whenever you like before the end of the month as well.

Should I raise my credit limit?

There are various points to consider before raising your credit limit. How you use your credit limit can affect your credit score. There's no hard and fast rule about when to request a credit limit increase, but here are some things to think about if you're considering adjusting your credit limit:

  • Your credit utilization should stay under 30% to be most effective. For example, if your credit limit is $1,000, you should be using $300 or less before you pay it off. So, if your credit utilization is more than 30%, it might be worth raising your credit limit.
  • A credit limit increase can help your credit score, but requesting an increase can ding your credit score. The impact is usually pretty small, and the benefits could outweigh that ding in the long run.
  • If raising your credit limit will tempt you to spend more than you can comfortably pay off on time, it might be best to hold off on requesting an increase.

Can I lower my interest rate?

Depending on the institution, you may be able to negotiate a lower rate by contacting the credit card issuer and requesting a reduction. Another option is to request a new card with lower interest like our Low Rate credit card. This can be helpful if you tend to carry a balance.

Which credit score does Mountain America use?

Mountain America Credit Union uses your FICO® Score² to determine your credit card details. Your FICO® Score lets lenders know what kind of borrower you are and if you are a credit risk or not.

How do I handle reporting to credit bureaus?

Errors on your credit report are bad news. They can lead to:

  • Lower credit scores
  • Higher interest rates
  • Difficulty getting hired for certain jobs
  • Denied credit and rental applications

We recommend checking your credit report at least annually. Every year, you can get a free credit report from the three major credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. For more information about what to do once you have your credit report, read our article about finding errors in your credit report.
