President's Message:
Navigating Economic Uncertainty
Sterling Nielsen, President/CEO
We have been through a lot in recent months. Inflation has hit many of us as the cost of housing, food and fuel has increased at alarming rates. The availability of many durable goods is low. Additionally, last quarter’s report from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis showed an unsettling negative growth rate of 1.5%, as economists are holding a collective breath. If we see a second consecutive quarter of negative GDP, we are technically in a recession.
Is a recession likely?
In 2020, without stimulus intervention, we likely would have seen a severe recession due to widespread unemployment (levels similar to the Great Depression). Now, that same stimulus is driving a boom in consumer spending, which is pushing inflation up and putting a squeeze on family budgets.
The data we have tells us that inflation appears to be near its peak. Consumers appear to be growing more selective with their spending, which typically reduces the pressure of inflation. We are seeing the high demand for homes begin to stabilize. Fuel costs also appear to be holding near current highs rather than rising further.
Preparing for an uncertain future
In the midst of economic uncertainty, we all wonder if we are doing enough to prepare for the unknown. I offer three tried-and-true suggestions to protect you and your family, whether we are in a recession or not:
1Utilize our free financial guides
One key benefit of membership at Mountain America is your access to our free financial guides. Take advantage of the opportunity to have an expert review your unique situation and make personalized recommendations. In good and bad economic times, this connection is as important as having a trusted doctor to support your physical health. Finances can be a major stressor, but with careful planning, they don’t have to be.
2Keep saving
The best way to protect you and your family is to always have a small stockpile of accessible dollars. With inflation, it may be hard to save. In that case, the best advice I can give is to not draw down too much. Wait as long as possible to spend those resources—you never know what’s around the corner. If the past couple of years have already taken a toll on your savings, keep building it back up—every contribution counts.
3Stay the course
This is the number one piece of advice any financial professional will tell you. Vice President of Wealth Management Chad Waddoups shares, “Saving for retirement is a marathon, not a sprint.” Don’t panic and pull your money out—there’s a good chance things are already settling and positioning for a comeback by the time you’re seriously thinking of divesting.
Reasons
to hope
Even if the GDP report indicates a recession, there’s no need to panic. If we do see a slowdown, I anticipate something mild.
We can be very proud of what we continue to accomplish. As individuals and a community, we have already faced uncertainty unflinchingly. As long as we work together, we can navigate the future and steady ourselves in the face of these economic challenges. Mountain America Credit Union is here to guide you forward. ▲
