Lori McQueen—A Story of Resilience
Quick Summary
The Dream Team pays a special visit to a woman with an inspiring story of hope.

After ongoing health challenges caused her to lose her nursing job in Florida, Lori McQueen was left without a place to call home. For months, she stayed in a women’s shelter, navigating uncertainty one day at a time. Lori traveled to Utah in 2023, carrying little more than determination and hope for a fresh start.
She later moved into The Other Side Village, a supportive housing community in Salt Lake City, where she now lives and works. She serves as a staff member and is often the first person other residents connect with while drawing from her own experience.
The Other Side Village currently includes 60 tiny homes with plans to expand to 456 homes. Their goal is to serve up to 500 residents and help more individuals transition into stable housing.
Preston Cochrane, CEO of The Other Side Village, nominated Lori for a FOX 13 Dream Team surprise, citing the impact she has made within the community. “She plays many roles here,” Preston said. “She may be a mentor, a friend or a family figure to the people she lives alongside. She wears a lot of different hats.”
Lori expressed how the village has provided more than housing—it has given her a sense of belonging. “It’s important that we have each other and that we’re there for each other,” she said.
The FOX 13 Dream Team and Mountain America Credit Union, surprised her during a gathering with friends and fellow residents at the community center. Sharlene Wells, representing Mountain America Credit Union, presented Lori with a gift basket that included blankets, self-care items, chocolates, gift cards and a contribution toward her savings.
“We are amazed by your journey and how far you’ve come,” Sharlene said during the presentation.
Lori reflected on how the strong relationships she has built at The Other Side Village have played a key role in her recovery and stability. “It’s a good thing to always have people to talk to, to cook with, to watch movies with or play games with,” she said. “It really makes a difference.”
