A New Narrative on Homeschooling | My Member Story

Inspiring minds want to know! Get to know Daniel and Jenny Phillips, owners of The Good and the Beautiful, and how they are improving the homeschooling experience while also ensuring educational opportunities for children in Africa.

During the pandemic, many small businesses endured significant challenges. But the homeschool curriculum company, The Good and the Beautiful, experienced quite the opposite. Business was steady for owners Daniel and Jenny Phillips when the pandemic hit, and then orders skyrocketed!

Daniel was working in the finance industry when he and Jenny decided to homeschool their youngest children. Jenny tried many different curriculum options, and although academically sufficient, they often required a lot of preparation time or lacked creativity and visual appeal. With Jenny’s experience in writing and literature, they decided to develop their own materials for homeschooling their family that would be simple to use and incorporate the beauty of nature, literature, poetry and art.

Soon other homeschool families that had heard about her courses expressed a desire to use them too, and before they knew it, Daniel and Jenny had a small business writing, printing and distributing curriculum.

They called their company The Good and the Beautiful because that’s what Jenny was looking for—materials that were not only educationally strong but beautiful and inspiring, too.

A new narrative on homeschooling

Education is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Homeschooling offers the opportunity to personalize education. Some children who struggle in a traditional school setting thrive with individualized instruction and the nurturing environment that homeschooling provides. “There were certain negative connotations associated with homeschooling that have now gone away,” Daniel explains. “People are realizing that children learn differently, and different children need different educational options.”

The Good and the Beautiful curriculum offers an engaging and comprehensive learning experience, allowing parents to cater to the unique needs of their children. With carefully designed materials, their curriculum equips parents with the tools to enhance their children's academic potential while instilling a lifelong love of learning.

Thriving in challenging times

When children were sent home to attend school virtually during the pandemic, many families began exploring homeschooling options. “Our combination of an engaging, academically strong and affordable curriculum has filled a need out there,” Daniel says. Their sales tripled quickly.

Choosing a financial partner

When launching their company, Daniel recognized the importance of having reliable financial support. For his personal banking, he had been a long-time satisfied member at Mountain America Credit Union. His history of receiving exceptional service gave him confidence that Mountain America could help support their new business venture. “As I explored the business products and services Mountain America offered,” Daniel states, “they aligned perfectly with what we needed then and continue to need as we grow.”

Fostering education and sustainability

Education is obviously a core value for Daniel and Jenny. Even in the early days of the company, they chose to offer many of the language arts and math courses as a free digital download, making homeschooling affordable for everyone. “As the company has grown and achieved financial success,” Daniel notes, “one of Jenny’s priorities has been to ensure we give back.”

Partnered with a nonprofit organization in Africa, The Good and the Beautiful has funded the construction of six schools in Uganda and the installation of over 30 water wells, with more projects underway.

We are proud to partner with The Good and the Beautiful in providing an enhanced educational experience—here and abroad!
