How competition became Dave’s greatest opportunity.
What makes a mechanic-first culture so transformative.
Dave’s philosophy on automotive craftsmanship excellence.
What started as Dave’s worst nightmare turned into his greatest blessing. When a national competitor decided to build their first Utah location right next door to Dave’s Auto in 2001, Dave was convinced it would spell disaster for his business. But this business survived, and twenty years later Dave was ready to expand again. It wasn’t easy! With a little urging from his wife, he approached the competitor and asked if they were interested in selling their building. “I call the guy up and he goes, ‘Dave, I told you we don't sell our buildings, … but let me check,’” Dave recalls. Months later, they closed the deal, and Dave had doubled his space without having to relocate. Watch the full episode to hear how Dave’s wife’s wisdom led to seizing an opportunity for the business.
What sets this shop apart isn't just their impressive array of equipment—it's a philosophy centered on craftsmanship and people. Miles explains their approach: “When we interview people, [we] tell them we’re just a bunch of mechanics that happen to run a business, not the other way around.” This mechanic-first mentality permeates everything they do and is the cornerstone of the culture they have built. Dave proudly identifies himself as a mechanic first, business owner second, recognizing that today's automotive technicians are essentially mechanical engineers, fluid engineers and electronics specialists all rolled into one.
At the heart of their success lies an uncompromising commitment to quality. Dave's philosophy is simple but profound: “The accuracy and thoroughness of your work is a representation of the quality of your craftsmanship.” This dedication to excellence has created a mentorship culture where senior technicians like Tyson, who’s been with Dave for 30 years, pass their knowledge to the next generation. The result is what Dave believes is truly unique in America—a 30-bay facility with full machining capabilities and every tool needed to deliver perfection.
