What is a credit union?

A credit union is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative that exists to improve members’ lives. In fact, they are the only democratically controlled financial institution in the United States. More than 104 million Americans are credit union members, with new memberships increasing by one million in the first quarter of 2016.1 Credit unions provide all members with equal voting rights, regardless of the dollar amount in their accounts. Mountain America cares about the individual members and families it serves and is committed to helping them achieve their financial dreams.

How does Mountain America add value to the financial system?

Mountain America, and credit unions in general, have a special niche in the marketplace. We place competitive pressure on all financial institutions to offer consumers favorable rates and services. In 2016, credit unions surpassed more than $1.2 trillion in assets.1 As of September 2016, Mountain America held over $5.7 billion in assets.

Are credit unions growing?

Credit union membership is growing at a healthy and stable pace. Today, there are more than 5,900 credit unions in the United States.1

Why should I choose Mountain America Credit Union?

The ability to choose where you entrust your money is fundamental. Members typically find lower or no fees, higher savings rates, lower loan rates and more personalized service at credit unions. As a result, surveys show that credit unions continually score higher than other financial institutions in consumer satisfaction. Mountain America members enjoy the convenience and financial security that comes with belonging to the nation’s 21st largest credit union by asset size.2 Mountain America has branch locations in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona.

How convenient are Mountain America’s services?

In addition to the more than 80 branch locations in the Intermountain West, PTA members can access over 5,400 Shared-Branching facilities and 50,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide. PTA members can also reach out to our Service Center toll-free at 1-800-748-4302 or log in to their Mountain America account through our Online and Mobile Banking options.

What is Shared Branching?

Shared Branching provides direct account access through a national credit union network. Members of participating credit unions may conduct transactions at shared facilities as though they were at their home credit union. Shared Branching allows you to conduct a range of transactions: deposits, withdrawals, loan payments and transfers between accounts.

How does being a member of Mountain America support the PTA?

As new members take advantage of the benefits that Mountain America offers through the PTA, both organizations experience additional value and growth. This results in more benefits for new and existing members. Some examples include: financial literacy and wellness activities available both in and out of the classroom, scholarships and grant opportunities.

What benefits does Mountain America offer me?

As a Member Benefit Provider for the National PTA, Mountain America provides unique benefits and incentives to PTA members. Mountain America seeks to serve its members through competitive loan and share rates, a $100 bonus when you open a new MyStyle Checking℠ account, financial wellness resources and many other services.

When will I receive my $100 MyStyle Checking bonus?

Typically, the money will be deposited into your account within 30 days, once all of the requirements have been met.

Are my funds safe at a credit union?

All funds deposited at a credit union are federally insured up to at least $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), an agency of the federal government.

What fees do I have to pay to join Mountain America?

There are no fees to join the credit union. The minimum amount required to open and maintain an account is $5.

Do credit unions pay taxes?

Credit unions pay payroll, property and sales taxes, as well as various licenses and fees. By law, they are exempt from paying income tax because all money earned—after operating expenses and setting aside statutory reserves— is returned to members. As not-for-profit institutions, credit unions return excess earnings to members—rather than an outside group of stockholders—in the form of higher savings rates, lower loan rates and lower or no fees. Big or small, every credit union shares this structure and service-oriented philosophy of “not for profit, not for charity, but for service.”

Who regulates credit unions?

The State’s Department of Financial Institutions regulates state-chartered credit unions. Federally chartered credit unions, like Mountain America, are regulated by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), an agency of the federal government. Credit unions are subject to many of the same consumer regulations as other financial institutions. In some cases, such as business lending, credit unions must adhere to even more strict regulations.
